“Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—in a word, to know himself—so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves.”— Pope St. John Paul II
The ‘Painted Lady‘ butterflies are out in Colorado en masse this month. They are all over the place. There are so many of them that the National Weather Service radar imagery captured the phenomenon and the unusual migratory behavior, described as not “exactly typical.” What a reminder of God’s awesome, creative power and mysterious ways.
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come! (2 Corinthians 5:17)
They are a beautiful juxtaposition in the fall landscape. The weather is growing cooler and the leaves are changing. These creatures are a reminder that metamorphosis always beckons the human heart. As they flutter about, it is a delight to see nature at work and ponder a metaphor for the power of transformation.
Human fulfillment and flourishing requires spiritual change. Embracing God’s word and living in the spirit of truth cannot but transform the mind and heart. Living in God’s grace is a grand adventure–to live as one who is made in the image and likeness of God is to dare to soar to new heights.
Human beings don’t have wings but we can fly. God’s grace elevates the human heart. Transcendent presence, the love of God, calls us act in ways that are “not typical”, a movement of migration to profound spiritual realities. We hope.
